Social Services in Jerusalem Neighborhoods, Survey, 2023
The SSIJN survey sampled 1500 Palestinians living across East Jerusalem’s 19 neighborhoods. 1255 of the 1500 respondents made up the representative sample, and an additional 250 respondents were sampled from the Beit Safafa neighborhood for the purpose of a natural experiment. Jewish Israelis living in East Jerusalem were excluded from the sample. The data was collected in-person, in Palestinian colloquial Arabic by a local survey firm, the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO). The survey was fielded from July to August 2023 and the response rate was 77%.
Ethnicity & Sanitation Index, ArcGIS, 2019
The Ethnicity & Sanitation Index traces nine measures of sanitation efficacy across six neighborhoods in East Jerusalem with residents representing three ethnic groups. The index includes measures for 32-gallon public trash receptacles, 48-gallon residential trash receptacles, 64-gallon residential trash receptacles, bulky items disposed of next to trash receptacles, small dumpsters, large dumpsters, recycling stations, stray litter, and illegal dumping sites. I collected the data by hand in the summer of 2019 using ArcGIS Online software on a mobile device with the help of a research assistant. Daily data collection routes were randomized.
